Ole Mas’

£22.00

Social commentary, politics or poli-tricks, double entendre, mockery, spectacle, and plenty picong – That is Trinidad Ole Mas’!

Description

On our Carnival adventures, we tried desperately to see the ole mas’. The hubby was excited too bad. For a history and politics buff this was too good to miss – living, dancing social commentary! Alas, we walked the length and breadth of Port-of-Spain with two toddlers in the midday sun but never found it.

Still, this is my ode to the traditional costumes that have come down since Carnival began in T&T. The Dame Lorraines that mock the French masters wives, the black oil and the blue devils that scared people into giving them a few coins, the sailors that emerged after the War… there are so many old time Carnival costumes that I couldn’t feature them all.

See the other paintings in the Mas’ series: Pretty Mas’ and Dirty Mas’.
