Blue Sky over A505

Every time I drive home from the studio, those big bodacious Hertfordshire skies just blow my mind!

Description

This painting is based on a gorgeous photo (one of the gazillion) I took somewhere along the A505 between Duxford and Royston. I think I may have used at least two photos as references for this piece.

I started out using complementary colour blocks for the sky and grounds thinking that when I added the true life colours over it, the complementaries would make them really pop!

Funny thing was, I fell in love with the blue that was supposed to be the under-layer for my red sky and the red that was supposed to be the under-layer for my blue sky! (Yep, I planned to paint it twice in different colours.) Those complementary layers never really got a chance to make a come-back because I just continued on with each piece as it progressed.

Once the sky was sorted and the tissue paper glued down for the fields, I did a lot of dithering over which texture I should use for the road. I really wanted some grit but not so much that my road looked lumpy like it needed resurfacing *grin* In the end I added paint to some pumice and was a very happy camper, slathering my mixture on with one of my favourite painting tools – my friend the palette knife.

I suspect this won’t be the last time I attempt to capture the beauty of the Hertfordshire sky.
